Mermaids are a popular theme for children’s costumes this year. With Halloween just around the corner, it is time to start planning your child’s costume! This article will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to sew a mermaid costume. In case you want to buy already made costume, you can check out these mermaid tails for kids. The first thing you need to do is make sure that you have all of the necessary supplies and tools before starting your project. You can find them all listed below:
-Fabric, at least five yards. Make sure that you choose a fabric with stretch in order to keep it comfortable and flexible for movement. I recommend using cotton lycra or knit jersey (or any other similarly light weight fabrics) because they are available in many different colors.
-Thread and sewing machine on heavy duty needle
-Scissors of some kind (preferably dressmaker’s shears)
-Six large safety pins or binder clips/clamps to hold pieces together while stitching them up, to make things easier. If these aren’t available, two people can work as clamps by holding the edges of the fabric together so seams don’t tear apart .
-Sewing needle (sharp)
-Zipper foot for sewing machine if you have one. If not, a regular foot will do just fine. It’s your preference which type of foot to use as long as it makes the job easier and/or faster. I’ve listed these items in order from what is most important to obtain first through those that are optional:
